Legends
of the Jews by Louis
Ginzberg Talmudic scholar Rabbi Dr. Louis Ginzberg,
ZT"L devoted most of his life to assembling this
massive collation of the Haggada--the traditions which
have grown up surrounding the Biblical narrative.
These stories have their roots from Talmud, Midrash,
and other sources, including oral. Sources for these
stories came from their original sources written in
Hebrew, Greek, Latin, Syrian, Aramaic, Ethiopic, Arabic,
Persian, and Old Slavic. Rabbi Ginzberg reproduced
them completely, accurately, and vividly. To this
day. "Legends of the Jews" remains a most
remarkable and comprehensive compilation of stories
connected to the Tanach.

Sefer
ha-Yuhasin
(Book
of Genealogy or Lineage) by Rav Abraham
Zacuto. This author was a Spanish astronomer, mathematician,
and historian; born at Salamanca about 1450; died in
Turkey after 1510. An astronomer of wide-spread reputation,
he was appointed professor at the university of Salamanca,
and later Saragossa. In 1504, during his sojourn at
Tunis, he wrote a chronological history of the Jews
from the Creation to 1500, making constant reference
to Jewish literature, and entitling his book "Sefer
ha-Yuhasin." In this work Zacuto gives an account
of the oral law as transmitted from Moses through the
elders, prophets, sages, and the like and the like,
and also records the acts and monuments of the kings
of Israel.

of the Reign of Ferdinand and Isabella by
William H. Prescott (V.1.) W.H. Prescott
was a preeminent American historian (partially blind)
who employed secretaries to read him manuscripts sent
from Spanish archives, Prescott set about writing a
work of sound scholarship that would also interest a
general audience. This work was written over 10 years
and in 1837 when it was complete, it enjoyed tremendous
critical and popular success on both sides of the Atlantic.
