On
Tuesday November 30, 2004 the International Society for Sephardic
Progress and Central Florida Hillel will present an evening of
Hanukah education in Central Florida.
At
an event titled Emperors and Rebels: The TRUE Story of Hanukah,
the community will be shown a film recently developed in both
Hollywood and Israel by historian Asaf Golan. Emperors and Rebels
is a new documentary (in English) developed by leading experts
on Jewish and Hellenistic history. The film gives us the historic
background that most of us never learned about Judah Maccabee
and the Hasmonean Revolt. Trustworthy Professors from Cal States
Los Angeles, Hebrew University, University California at Berkeley,
and New York University who specialize in the Hellenistic period
explains what really happened during this tumultuous period of
Jewish history. Historians include: Stanley M. Burstien, Erich
S. Gruen, Lawrence H. Schiffman and Doron Mendels. The viewers
will get factual details to understand the origins of the history
of the holiday of Hanukah.
The
event will also encapsulate a slide show of high resolution photos
taken at the ancient city of Modi'in, historic home to Judah Maccabee
and the Hasmonean family. These photos will be shown by Shelomo
Alfassa, Executive Director of the International Society for Sephardic
Progress. Taken in the summer of 2003 while living in Israel,
Mr. Alfassa will present to the public photos which include the
oldest synagogue ever found in Israel. Rachamim Berman
HaLevi, Director of Jewish Education of the International Society
for Sephardic Progress will make a short speaking presentation.
Mr. HaLevi is a historian specializing in Roman history, and on
this night will speak on the topic of miracles within the Jewish
world.
With
more than 4,500 Jewish college students in the area, Hillel offers
students the means to explore and celebrate their Jewish identity
in a dynamic and comfortable environment. Each year, Hillel connects
students to their community, their peers and their heritage through
an array of social, cultural and community service programs.
The
International Society for Sephardic Progress is a Jewish agency
developed to serve the Sephardic community--the descendants of
the Jews of historic Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Levant
who share both common religious and cultural bonds. Although based
in the United States, the ISFSP is an advocacy organization representing
Sephardim internationally, and is the publisher of the award winning
International Sephardic Journal.
This
event is open to all and there is no charge for attendance. It
will be held at the University of Central Florida - 4000 Central
Florida Blvd. Orlando, FL 32816. The event will be held in the
